If you work in a company with enforced password changes (policies), you may forget to renew your login password in time and be unable to log in when you want to access your remote desktop remotely. 

You may receive this screen:

There is a trick you can use to change the password despite this lock. Create a new remote desktop connection by following the steps below:

Windows+R  > mstsc  > save the connection


Save the connection file as Default.rdp and then open the file with a editor. Insert the following line at the end of the file and save it again.


Now log on to the remote desktop again. 

This takes you to the login screen where you can renew/replace the login password.
